Utah Defensive Pistol League

Getting Started

Process for joining IDPA and/or UDPL:

Note:

A shooter is not required to join the IDPA to participate in non-IDPA UDPL matches, and a shooter DOES NOT have to be a UDPL member to participate in any UDPL sponsored event. Check the schedule for IDPA, Non-IDPA Handgun, ICORE Handgun and 3-Gun match dates.

new-shooter orientation
(Oct. 2001).

  1. Make sure you have the equipment listed below.

  2. Come to your first UDPL IDPA match to see if you like defensive pistol shooting.

  3. At the first match (IDPA or other), arrive one hour early for new-shooter orientation and pay the match fee for a new shooter.

  4. If you liked the IDPA match and want to continue with IDPA events, wait for the next match to officially join IDPA or UDPL (see Note: above).

  5. Come to your next UDPL match, and, if you are going to continue participating in IDPA matches, bring the completed IDPA membership application and liability waiver forms, pay the necessary IDPA membership, annual UDPL membership (optional) and match fees. (IDPA membership application forms will usually be available at the match.)

  6. At your third match, bring the regular match fee.

  7. When you receive your IDPA membership card, bring it to the next match so the number and expiration date can be recorded.

Equipment needed for an IDPA match:

  1. Eye Protection.  Impact resistant eye protection.

  2. Ear Protection.  Ear plugs or ear muffs.

  3. Your Gun.  You may shoot with any gun you like, regardless of caliber or gun modifications. However, only IDPA approved guns will be counted in the official IDPA match results and statistics.

  4. Holster.  We're not too picky about following the IDPA holster rules to the letter for first time shooters. General guidelines are:

·         A holster worn on your strong-side hip.

·         A type that you would carry a concealed weapon in all day.

·         Have a covered trigger guard.

·         No cross-draw or shoulder holsters are allowed.

  1. 200 Rounds of Ammo.  You will probably only need 100-150 rounds, but we don't want anyone to run out. If we are shooting the Classifier you will need 110 rounds minimum and may need upwards of 150. Bring extra, take it home.

  2. Spare Magazines or Speedloaders.  Four magazines are ideal, but you need at least three 10-round magazines in the Stock Service and Enhanced Service divisions (higher capacity magazines may be used, but they must be down-loaded to no more than 10 rounds) or three 7 or 8-round magazines if you're going to shoot in the Custom Defensive division. (If you are going to participate in any of the regular Handgun or 3-Gun matches, more is better.)
At least three revolver speedloaders are needed - five or six is better.

  3. Magazine or Speedloader Pouches.  Use your back pocket if you don't have one. In IDPA matches, you are allowed to wear two magazine pouches for pistols (one double pouch or two single pouches), and three speedloaders for revolvers - two in front of the holster and one behind (see the current IDPA rulebook for specifics.). For other UDPL Handgun and 3-Gun matches,  if you've got them, you can wear/use them.

  4. Match Fee.  Exact change is preferred, but not necessary.

Note that the equipment listed above can be used to participate in ANY of the UDPL events.

Remember, the New Shooter Orientation starts one-half hour before the match begins.

If you have not participated in a UDPL match before,
you MUST complete the New Shooter Orientation
before you can shoot the match.
