Utah Defensive Pistol League

What is the UDPL?

The Utah Defensive Pistol League (UDPL) - is a non-profit organization based in Utah County. Originally set up as an International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) affiliate club, we have expanded our offerings to include a variety of handgun matches including all-steel, IDPA, ICORE (International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts) and 3-Gun (handgun/rifle/shotgun) matches. We even hold an annual Night Shoot as well as our traditional New Year's Day 3-Gun Match.

A shooter DOES NOT have to be a UDPL member to participate in any UDPL sponsored event.

UDPL operational guidelines are itemized in its by-laws.

Matches are usually held at The Range on the 4th Saturday of each month. 3-Gun matches are usually held once per quarter on a 3rd Saturday. Check the current schedule for specific dates.

If you would like to be notified of upcoming events via e-mail, please use our Match Notification link.

One of the pleasures of participating in UDPL events is the opportunity to associate and learn from other UDPL shooters. In the photo above, Blake Huff (2nd from left) fields questions about upcoming out-of-state matches from the other shooters in his squad (left to right - Curtis Bullock, Blake Huff, Michael Scott, Brandon Limb, Alan Scott and Jay Ostler.)

The UDPL offers a wide range of shooting events including:

IDPA Handgun Matches -
We offer a number of IDPA matches each year that include realistic scenarios that require proper defensive tactics, as well as good gun handling and shooting skills. Match round counts are usually somewhere between 100 -150 rounds. These matches offer the shooter a wide variety of experiences such as:

Note: IDPA rules dictate that a shooter must join the IDPA at or prior to shooting a Classifier match or their second IDPA match. (Refer to Getting Started for specifics.) IDPA membership is not required to shoot a 3-Gun or Non-IDPA Handgun match.

Non-IDPA Handgun Matches -

These matches usually consist of 8 Courses Of Fire (COF) and often involve shooting steel targets of various sizes and configurations including dueling-trees, poppers, movers, etc. as well as paper IDPA style targets. Minimum round count for a recent handgun match was 180.

Categories for these matches include:
TRM -  Ten Round Maximum, no optics or compensators
HiCAP -  High capacity mags, no optics or compensators
REV -  Revolver - 8-round max, no optics
REVOP -  Revolver - 8-round max with optics
OPEN -  Anything goes - within the bounds of safety

ICORE Handgun Matches -

Also included in Non-IDPA Handgun Match category are International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts (ICORE) matches. These matches are similar to the above, but use standard NRA D-1 targets and a unique scoring system. Even though these matches are mainly designed for revolver shooters, any handgun shooter can participate.

Categories for these matches include:
  IC-L  (ICORE Limited) -

All revolvers that do not have compensators, ports, optical or Red Dot sights

  IC-O  (ICORE Open) -

All revolvers that have any compensators, ports, optical or Red Dot sights

  TRM  (Ten Round Mags) -

Pistols that have 10-round or less mags – no opticals or compensators

  HiCAP  (HiCap mags) -

Pistols that have 10+ mags – no opticals or compensators

  OPEN -

      All other pistols

3-Gun Matches -
Our 3-Gun matches usually consist of 8 COFs and offer the shooter the experience of using all of the defensive weapon types (rifle, pistol, shotgun) either separately, or in conjunction with each other (pistol/shotgun, pistol/rifle, etc.) COFs may include IDPA-type targets as well as steel plate targets. One of the rifle COFs usually includes steel silhouette targets out to 180 yards. An example round count from a recent shoot included: 150 Rifle, 40 birdshot, 4 shotgun slugs, 120 pistol.

Club officers include volunteers that spend endless amounts of time arranging for matches, designing Courses Of Fire (COF), setting up and taking down targets, orienting new shooters, officiating as Safety Officers (SO) to ensure that all shooters have a safe and enjoyable experience, scoring and posting match results, etc.  EVERYONE who participates in a match is expected to help score, tape targets, and pick up brass.

We have tried to keep match fees to a minimum, and would rather have shooters come and shoot than stay home because they can't justify the match fees.

Our Goals:
  1. Be Safe
  2. Have Fun
  3. Improve Gun Handling Skills
  4. Improve Tactical Skills
  5. Promote the Shooting Sports

The club hopes that its members will actively work to defend our Right to Keep and Bear Arms. If we don't work to preserve our rights, who will?

Some organizations that can help us are:
The National Rifle Association (NRA)
Gun Owners of America (GOA)
